Author's Note: In the following Journal Entry, all Japanese names (excepting that of characters) will be in first name-family name mode, rather than the traditional family-name first-name of Japanese. For simplicity's sake and because the author and director named in this are more well known in their "first family" name version, and I don't want anyone to have to sit here going... "O.o who's she talking about...OH YEAH..." So while on a normal basis, I would always do the traditional Japanese "family first" name version, I decided for this rant, I'll just save everyone the confusion.
Every once in a while, I have a blazing resurgence of love for a favorite anime. Rurouni Kenshin
is my absolute number one. Kenshin and Kaoru my very first OTP. Slayers
is my number two. When I found out about Revolution and Evo-R, a massive resurgence of love and obsession kicked in for Lina and co. As you can see from my gallery with the fact that I have a Slayers
folder full of fan art. Sometimes that's what it takes. A new season ten years plus after the fact to remind me of how much I love the hell
out of something. Always loved Slayers
, watch it at least once--sometimes twice a year (mostly it's Try I watch over and over again though lol). But doing that doesn't make me draw tons of bloody fan art. Nor does it make me delve madly back into the fandom. It took a WHOLE NEW SEASON OF AWESOME to make me do that.
Now, for Rurouni Kenshin
, my number one, it takes much, much less.
For one thing, I watch RuroKen
quite often. So often that there are DVDs that I've already had to replace because I watch them so much. I know the first handful of episodes by heart. In Japanese of course, because RuroKen cannot
be watched in English. Which means exactly what you think it means. I can quote the entire first episode of RuroKen
in Japanese the way one quotes The Princess Bride
. I don't have to read the subtitles of RuroKen
anymore. I know it practically by heart. I laugh at the same moments, tear up at the same moments, cheer and squeal and shout at the same moments. It doesn't matter that I first saw the series over ten years ago.
It doesn't lose its awesomeness or how much I love it.
is an anime that I never got into its fanbase. Mainly because I live in fear of anime fans. Delving into the fanbase of Slayers
was rough by itself. I never did it when I originally saw the series, but I did it a little now. Quickly got out before I was sucked into silly things like arguing about who should be with who and personality traits. No thank you. I don't need that. And RuroKen
is SO incredibly special to me and so much my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE that I'm terrified of hearing or reading something that will depress the hell out of me.
For example. The second OVA Reflection
doesn't exist. It's NOT canon. I don't care what anyone says. Even the crazy genius Nobuhiro Watsuki-san himself disowned it.
It's a very pretty animated FAN FICTION. Period. It's OOC, depressing, inaccurate and nothing at all what the creator intended for these characters. So much so that I will reiterate. Nobuhiro Watsuki-san, creator of RuroKen
the "second" OVA. There is no discussion.
And if you really wanted to push me I could go on and on and on and on why, for example, that animated fan fiction is OOC. I know these characters and this story so well. I could teach a class
. Honest to god, I'm probably wrong, but I've seen and read the incarnations of RuroKen
so often that I feel like I would officially be the number one fan. I'm probably not, lord knows I don't produce any fan stuff for RuroKen
, but part of the reason for that is because I feel like I could never do it justice.
And yet despite that... Lately I've been feeling the need to produce fan stuff.
Not fan fiction, god, I gave that up YEARS ago. I gave it a whirl for fun with Slayers
and LOOK. It's not FINISHED. And there's a ton of others I still
haven't finished and god knows when I finally will. If I ever do.
But fan art...?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm... Maybe. My art has gotten decent enough that maybe, just maybe, I will feel good about doodling some RuroKen
fan art. But mostly, the reasons why I've been inclined in the last couple of days to suddenly draw some RuroKen
fan art are because of a couple of interesting facts--that have had the same affect on me as the new season of Slayers
1. Apparently, in the summer of 2010, the Japanese began filming a live action RuroKen
Now, whether this is a good thing or a horrible thing remains to be seen. I had a mixed reaction of *GASP OMG* that was a blend of excitement and horror. I'm not sure what to make of it. There's not much information on it, aside from the fact that they apparently started filming last summer and that the reason why they "waited" for so long was that they wanted the CGI to be advanced enough to pull it off well.
This is RuroKen
. It's a historical shounen manga and anime. Kenshin's moves a long with some of the bad guys might be a bit... over the top, but it's not like RuroKen
is a fantasy
like most historical Japanese anime and manga (such as Inuyasha
or Ninja Scroll
for example). There are no demons in RuroKen
. No monsters--except for human ones--and no matter how monstrous they might look, they're still human. Akira Kurosawa-san could've made a RuroKen
And do you have any idea how awesome
that would've been...? Making it less over the top seems to work well. Look at the original OVAs (Trust & Betrayal
). Kurosawa-san would've made RuroKen
even BETTER because he would've given it the realism of the OVAs, but would've kept the humor (because he's good at that too, no lack of humor in Kurosawa movies--note Yojimbo
and The Hidden Fortress
) which the OVAs sadly lack. Even the manga--during the time period in which the original OVAs take place--there was still humor. And Kurosawa-san totally would've played up manga Kenshin's deadpan snarkiness (which the anime doesn't play up nearly enough).
But, ultimately, I'm both excited and utterly terrified. Needing
CGI for a historical, non-fantasy anime worries me greatly. And yet...it's RuroKen
. I can't help but be a little excited. Even if the reviews when it comes out makes it out to be the most horrible thing ever, I'm still going to watch it. I'll reserve judgment until I see it for myself.
2. Two months ago, a new Rurouni Kenshin
anime project was announced.
WTF?! Cue freak out. A new new
project? Or just FINALLY finishing the last third of the damn manga in anime form? Are we FINALLY going to get the Jinchuu arc? Or or or or... are they rebooting Kenshin entirely?!
No idea, honestly. There's no information. But there are these, which are scans gathered from here: [link]
-- The-Oro.com Kenshin's scar got bigger O.OWhat's up with Kaoru's hair?Well, Sano looks the same at least. EXCEPT THE AKU KANJI IS NOW TATTOOED ONTO HIS BACK!! *O*Yahiko is so ANGRY! XD Megumi has got HAIR yo Aoshi's got glasses! Squee! Misao's hair got spikier. Weird. Saitou looks grittier. And...more spikes. O.o What's with the spikes? OMG HIKO-SAMA'S HAIR AND IN A SUIT?! You know...now I'm thinking that Hiko-sama might just be Fury's father...
And in case you don't know... This is Fury Flatliner (yes that's his name) from Watsuki-san's latest manga Embalming
If you go through the actual pages on The-Oro.com you will find more "revamped" images of RuroKen
characters. From Tomoe and Enishi to the Juppongatana and Gein (who, btw, got a MASSIVE revamp! If you ever read the manga--including Watsuki-san's comments--you'll die
laughing like I did when you see the revamp of Gein). Hannya, as an aside, also looks so much more awesome. But a few of the others have...gotten scarier and freakier. Maybe Embalming
has gotten to Watsuki-san's head? Or maybe he's just like I'M GONNA GO NUTS~!
But what does this mean? No idea. Odd that they announce a RuroKen
project and Watsuki-san releases these upgraded designs of RuroKen
characters in his current style 15 years after the manga first began. Are they rebooting RuroKen
all together? Or are they just making the Jinchuu arc? If they do make just the Jinchuu arc, are they going to draw the characters with these designs? Some of these designs call into question the characters' background stories. Are those being updated too? How can
they be really? Unless it IS a reboot? I just don't know.
But it's...kind of EXCITING. I have no idea what it means, or what will happen, but...I haven't felt like this since... since well, January 2010 when I realized HOLY SHIT THEY AIRED A NEW SEASON OF SLAYERS
IN THE SUMMER?! WTF YO HOW DID I MISS THAT?! AND THE SECOND HALF IS STARTING NOW?! SCORE ME!! And because I'm excited, I want to do RuroKen
fan art. My only big question is...do I use the new designs that Watsuki-san has brought out? I kind of want to in some cases. I mean, Kenshin looks a bit beefier and taller to me, which of course is GREATLY APPEALING. And Kaoru, while her hair is a bit strange, the notes indicate that we're finally going to see the bad ass that Watsuki-san always said she was, but we could never see because she was surrounded by SUPERMEN. She's got a dagger
hidden in her obi
. And she's wearing her kimono AND carrying around her bokuto
. She rarely had it on her if she wasn't in her gi
. SO AWESOME. And Megumi and Aoshi are sporting glasses?! I wanna draw that! And boy, will I have fun doodling Megumi's hair. There goes all my ink, but STILL. And I kind of like that Watsuki-san seems to be "reclaiming" RuroKen
, which is still his magnum opus
, by redesigning the characters in his current, evolved style. There was so much Marvel influence in RuroKen
because Watsuki-san is a Stan Lee fanboy that it was practically a love song. The list of references is practically endless. And in these drafts, there seems to be little evidence of those things anymore. Hannya doesn't have Wolverine claws. Aoshi no longer sports the Gambit trenchcoat. Jin-e doesn't look like a crazy old Gambit. Mumyoui no longer looks like a Venom clone. Hyougo looks less like Apocalypse. And yet...some of these characters (namely Jin-e and Hannya) now look about ten times scarier than they did in the original. Mumyoui just looks awesome
with his new design. But that's this fangirl's personal opinion. He actually looks like a bad guy that would be COOL and not just... well, Venom. Not that Venom isn't cool. Venom is cool. But now Mumyoui has his own level of cool, rather than trying to steal Venom's. Not that I'll be drawing ANY of them. Hells no. I'm sticking to the Kenshin-gumi. I'm not THAT good an artist. I certainly am NOT Watsuki-sama.
Other character designs that I will definitely
not draw but look as cool as hell are the other Oniwabanshuu. Hyotoko and Beshimi are just scary
yo. Shikijou actually looks bad ASS
. And imagining the plot with these much more awesome looking characters makes certain things--like Misao-chan remembering Hannya-kun--that much MORE awesome. I mean... I try imagining the new design of Hannya training a little Misao and the amount of AWESOME is exponential.
So I don't know... I kind of want to draw them with their new designs, but at the same time, most fans probably haven't seen them and/or don't know this information, so is it best to just stick to the original concepts to do fan art? I really have no clue. I figure ultimately I'll mess around with the new designs because it is they, as well as these two absurd announcements twelve years after the series ended, that have gotten me all excited.
And, of course, what happens when I'm excited about an anime again (aside from a surge in fan art)?
I watch it again.
And can I just say--damn
. This show is SO good. So much love. SO MUCH LOVE.
Kenshin and Kaoru. My original OTP.
Though I love Sano/Megumi, Aoshi/Misao, Yahiko/Tsubame, and Shishio/Yumi too.
Still. Kenshin and Kaoru. ONE. TRUE. PAIRING.
Oh the love. The love I have for this show. <333333333333
Please excuse me while I giggle maniacally at Kenshin knocking down an entire gang of Sumo wrestlers with rice buckets while muttering "oro."
